Lessons Learned from High Profile Incidents

Fire can be devastating

With the ability to engulf premises at speed, the importance of sensitive and functioning fire detection systems and fire alarm testing procedures is absolutely essential.

In April 2019, one of France’s most popular tourist attractions, the Notre-Dame, burst into flames, destroying much of the cathedral’s roof and famous spire.

While the cause of the blaze is still unknown, we do know that the fire alarm system at Notre-Dame wasn’t sufficient enough.

A fire alarm first sounded inside the cathedral at 6:20pm, but for 23 critical minutes cathedral staff searched for a blaze, unable to find the cause.

It wasn’t until a second alarm went off at 6:43pm that a fire was detected in the attic of the centuries-old religious landmark, and by then the flames had taken hold.

Importance of Working Alarms and Fire Alarm Testing Procedures

While we still don’t know the cause, an effective alarm system and regular testing could have helped saved much of this iconic attraction from destruction.

Accredited under the BAFE scheme, TIS has experience in designing a market leading range of fire detection systems and intelligent devicesright through to complex multi-panel systems.

Whether you own a brand-new office building or take care of an 18th century monastery, having an effective fire alarm system and fire alarm testing procedure in place is paramount – as the Notre-Dame fire demonstrates.

Going beyond the basic requirements

The fire at Grenfell Tower in June 2017 brought a number of fire safety procedures and practices into focus. Namely the UK’s lax fire regulations and the use of materials in construction that are permitted for development, but have the potential to increase risk in the event of a fire.

Not only was Grenfell a tragic loss of life, it also should serve as a reminder to all those with responsibility for premises to ensure they not only meet – but exceed – requirements concerning fire safety. This protects the people who use the premises, and the reputation of owners and facilities managers who can demonstrate their commitment to safety.
